Furry Friends

To the animals we love. I adopted my first cat from the Williamsburg Humane Society. I’d just (unexpectedly) left the Peace Corps, due to medical reasons.
I was 23. His name was the “General” and had been surrendered when his human deployed abroad. We found each other at the perfect moment.
Flash forward to June 2021- Oliver (green photo) found me in the garden. Found me in a strange time in history (both personal & global). A companion in the chaos. But we don't get to choose how long we get to love someone on Earth. Alas, Oliver’s been missing 3 months.
I did all the things. Signs, social media, etc. Even talked to animal communicators (four!). No confirmed sightings since. It's a unique ache, the grief of a missing friend.
Through my search, I met incredibly kind strangers who shared their own stories of love and loss. Even a handful of hopeful endings (one cat came home after a year!). In my search for him, I also found out that animal shelters have been full for the last couple years. New organizations have emerged to help introduce humans to pets in need. Welcoming environments. Cheers to our furry friends & the people who help bring us together. ♥️ P.s. I know I’ll find another cat love when it’s right. ✨
